Tip of the Day: Sweat it out! Don’t be afraid to work up a good sweat! Sweating is a natural body process enacted by homeostatic mechanisms to keep the body cool. As our body temperature rises, such as during a workout or when sitting in a sauna, our sweat glands automatically release salty liquid to cool us down via our autonomic nervous system (a system that cannot consciously be controlled). Fun fact – we are born with between 2-4 million sweat glands and women actually have more sweat glands then men, but men’s sweat glands are typically more active. Thank goodness for that!

Aside from preventing the body from overheating, many experts believe there are real benefits to sweating regularly. Our skin is the largest organ we have; it is also a major organ of elimination, so there are great detoxification benefits from sweating. For instance, studies have found toxins such as arsenic, cadmium, led and mercury are excreted in sweat.

My favorite way to get in a great sweat is to sit in the sauna for 10-15 minutes after a workout. Sore muscles following a weight training workout is not an uncommon experience for us fitness enthusiasts. Because the sauna increases our body’s temperature, circulation increases and this blood flow to sore muscles can help ease aches. Still, the best benefit in my opinion is that a short sauna session can be relaxing!

I love the sauna after a great workout. It's where I do most of my stretching and relax. Have you ever tried the hot yoga?
