Tip of the Day: When cardio comes up, there’s always the question of…timing! “Is doing cardio in the morning better than the evening for burning fat?” “Should I do cardio before or after lifting for the greatest benefit?” I have two answers for this. The first is going to be the nitty gritty on the science behind cardiovascular training and the other is my opinion taken from experience. So, first off, glycogen ((the body’s carbohydrate stores)) is the preferred energy source for body functioning, such as during a workout. The body has a sort of “order” to what forms of stored energy it grabs at. Once it depletes the glycogen, it will move onto protein and fat ((all my undergraduate biology & physiology classes are coming back to me lol)) So, from one science perspective, it may be more advantageous to allow the body to lift first in a workout, fueled by glycogen then move onto burning fat calories during cardio at the end of the workout. I only want to share my personal opinion because I care about you and your own health and fitness journey. I truly want you to enjoy it. So, pick the order and timing that works best with your preference and schedule. For instance, I used to dislike cardio at the end of a workout ((sometimes I still do)) and what ends up happening is that I’ll skip it because I want to move onto the next thing in my day. In that case, it would benefit me more to begin with cardio or do it in the AM. Bottom line…the best time is the time that is best for you personally!

Hi Lauren, thanks for your posts — can you tell me if stair climbers all typically have the same intensity settings? I did the above and it was an awesome workout, but at level 9 where you had said "sprint steps" my machine was at more of a brisk walk pace… is that correct or should I have upped the speed?
