Thoughtful Thursday Tip: Would you believe hunger and cravings are actually two different sensations?? Before you get angry at the feelings of hunger, understand the body utilizes hunger communication as a survival tactic to ensure we are properly fed. After digestion in the stomach occurs, blood sugar and insulin begins to drop and a hormone called ghrelin is secreted from the inner lining of the stomach. This hormone travels via the vagus nerve to a portion in the brain known as the hypothalamus. When the brain receives this message, it triggers the release of neuropeptide Y, which then provides us with the feelings of a stimulated appetite.
In contrast, our cravings are typically for foods that are high in fat and calories ((pizza, cookies, flaming hot cheetos – oh, hello there cravings)) Opioids are a chemical released into the bloodstream following the digestion of fatty, sugary foods; they bind to receptors in our brains that provide pleasurable and euphoric emotions ((so, that ice cream really may be making you feel better lol)).
A great way to manage cravings is to ensure you’re properly feeding your body. For this reason, I like to eat several small meals per day. If I go too long in between meals, I get a stomach ache in which I cannot distinguish my hunger for healthy foods from my cravings for junk, which makes healthy eating a whole lot more difficult! Overall, understanding the science behind nutrition is critical in knowing how to eat for results!

I love the Whole Food’s slogan, “Healthy looks good on you!”
So, I’m a little over dressed for grocery shopping; while it wasn’t ideal for walking up and down isles, it did make for a good photo op!
