Question: Will weight lifting make me bulky? I want to have a fit body but not gain size.
Answer: The myth is that muscle weighs more than fat, which is incorrect because a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of lead: a pound is a pound. What is true, however, is that muscle is more dense than fat. This means that it physically takes up less space on the body. So, a 150lb woman with muscle will physically appear smaller than a 150lb woman with less muscle. I, myself, started my fitness journey 10 pounds LESS than what I currently weigh, yet my dress size dropped and I have way more muscle definition now! In addition, you’ve heard me say that muscle burns calories constantly just to sustain itself, so that 150lb woman with more muscle will have an easier time maintaining her weight even while eating sligthly more. Muscle has many advantages, and being bulky is certainly not something to worry about! Here’s where you may get caught up…do you ever see those “fitspiration” images of women flexing and their quads, arms, and back look big and bulky?! Those images fooled me until I realized that even when I flexed I appeared much larger than I really am. Have no fear…muscle is more beneficial than you may even realize!
