TIP OF THE DAY: Understanding catabolism during cardio. The term anabolic refers to a “muscle building” phase when your body is properly fed/nourished and therefore using smaller substances for form more complex molecules. On the other hand, catabolism refers to the breakdown of complex molecules into smaller substances. In terms of your muscles, when in a catabolic state, your muscles are being broken down due to a deficiency of something such as protein, calories, carbohydrates, fats, etc. Many people believe preforming long workouts or long cardio sessions is beneficial, however, it is just just the opposite! After a certain point, your body will go from an anabolic state to catabolic – eating your muscles. This is why it is very important to keep your body “fed” during workouts with protein and BCAAs or to keep your workouts to under 45-60minutes and watch any cardio over 40minutes! Train SMARTER not HARDER 🙂
