HEALTHY LIVING IN YOUR TOWN

Healthy Living in Your Town
You’re on the healthy living path: eating clean and exercising regularly. But, where do you draw the line between staying on track and enjoying life? First off, let’s make a few things clear… life is for living and should be enjoyed to its fullest; a healthy lifestyle can be molded into one in which all the wonderful things in life are enjoyed. Moderation is the key to indulgences; if you’re looking for a way to justify McDonald’s on a regular basis, then you’re not truly interested in a healthy lifestyle, but there is certainly a way to enjoy life and keep your health a priority.
Whether your in a small, rural town or a fast-paced city, there are ways to enjoy your healthy lifestyle. I want to share my healthy day out in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As someone who has worked in the fitness industry and seen the areas of the country where health and fitness is most prominent, Wisconsin is certainly not one of them. Yes, we have gyms and health food stores; no, we don’t all milk cows and live on farms 😉 My favorite way to enjoy health living in any town is to go out and explore and find local gems.
The third ward in Milwaukee is one of my favorite places. The third ward is an area right outside of downtown Milwaukee and is Milwaukee’s art and fashion district with adorable boutiques, galleries, restaurants, fitness studios, and the river walk, which spans the Milwaukee river. In general, I have found that the art/fashion districts of many cities are awesome places to go explore and hot spots for local health-related places.

The Milwaukee Public Market is one of my favorite places to wander through. It reminds me of a local farmers market with various merchants. This market has a great variety of specialty and organic foods, spices, and kitchen gadgets. Food can be purchased to be cooked at home or eaten right there. These types of venues are located in various forms in cities across the globe. I could spend hours walking through here!

I love purchasing fresh fruit/veggies and salmon or shrimp and eating it outside on a beautiful day.

The Green Kitchen is also my go-to at the Milwaukee Public Market for fresh, organic lunch options or a freshly made juice. This is “the green dream” – celery, spinach, apple, and ginger. YUM!

After an afternoon spent strolling and shopping, my mom and I made a stop at my favorite third ward eatery – Swig. It has the most adorable “small plate” options and amazing salads. The whole side of the restaurant opens up for summer dining.

My lunch: Pan seared scallops on top of a bed of mixed greens with grape tomatoes, red grapes, mandarin oranges, and fresh strawberries with a side of raspberry vinaigrette.

Tip – salads topped with protein with a side of fresh fruits/veggies are a great lunch or dinner option out at a restaurant; always ask for the salad dressing on the side to control how much you use. Restaurants load sodium into meals, even seemingly healthy meals, so salads are a great option for greens and protein, and fruits provide a great source of carbohydrates (especially for the gluten-free crowd).

Of course, an outfit of the day picture!

Picture from a few days back, but my mom is seriously the most amazing mother a girl could ask for and truly my best friend!

I hope this post inspired you to find healthy living hot spots in your own town. If you’re ever in the Milwaukee area, I highly suggest checking out the above options!
